EBOLA:TWO NEW CASES CONFIRMED

There are now 2 new confirmed cases of Ebola in Nigeria, bringing the total recorded in the country to 14.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu today, August 22, 2014.
The new patients are said to be spouses of two others who made primary contact with Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, who brought the disease into the country.
The duo are the first secondary contacts to be infected with the disease in Nigeria.
Ebola has claimed the lives of 5 patients who tested positive including the index case, Patrick Sawyer.

Controversy Arises Over N1.9 Billion Ebola Fund

Presidential aide, Reuben Abati says the money is to be used for the fight against Ebola but the health minister has something else in mind

Controversy has arisen over the N1.9 billion supposedly released by the Federal Government for the purpose of stopping the Ebola scourge.
The allocation of the money was announced by the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.
Abati said on August 8:
"President Jonathan also approved a Special Intervention Plan and the immediate release of N1. 9 billion for its implementation, to further strengthen on-going steps to contain the virus such as the establishment of additional isolation centres, case management, contact tracing, deployment of additional personnel, screening at borders, and the procurement of required items and facilities."
However, the Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said yesterday, August 26, 2014 that the money is to be used to buy cars and other equipment for the ministry of health.
According to him:
"The N1.9billion approved by the president was for the federal ministry of health. It is not for Ebola fund. It will be used to procure more vehicles for working which have been ordered. It would be used to procure more drugs that have been ordered... and other items.
"In the case of Lagos state, after the president met commissioners of health, the president then asked the minister of health to discuss with the technical people and money has been approved for Lagos state”
Onyebuchi announced yesterday that the Ebola virus has been contained and that only one confirmed case is remaining in the country.

NANO SILVER CURE FOR EBOLA?

The manufacturers of Nanosilver, Minerals for Life Limited, on Thursday denied claims that the mineral solution was a cure for Ebola Virus.

This is contained in a statement issued by the company’s sub Saharan Africa Coordinator, Mr. Adetunji Fadayiro, in Lagos.
The statement said the company was involved in the manufacturing, distribution and marketing of mineral solutions such as Nanosilver, vitamin and mineral infused water, among others.
It stated that the Nanosilver solution was meant to boost the immune system and provide the needed nutrients for the proper functioning of the body.
“Our brand of Nanosilver is classified as a dietary supplement.
“Minerals for Life cater for numerous customers who utilise our Nanosilver solution as an immune booster in a number of health situations.
“Concerned clientele have in recent days drawn our attention to a claim that Nanosilver solution which is marketed for human consumption and ingestion is a pesticide.
“It is, therefore, pertinent to address this information in the public domain. Nanosilver is approved by the United States Department of Agriculture and Food, with a pesticide registration.
“Nanosilver is also approved by the same U.S Department of Agriculture and Food with Food Establishment approval.
“Amongst other approvals, Nanosilver is approved for purchase by the U.S Government Veterans Hospital Association both as a disinfectant and supplement,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the firm as saying in the statement.
The company stated that Nanosilver had 15 government approvals for various uses.
“Minerals for Life Limited did not claim Nanosilver as a cure for Ebola.
“We seize this opportunity to congratulate the Federal Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Ministry of Health for their proactive approach in fighting the Ebola disease.
“As it has resulted in the recovery of some patients treated with antibiotics and a cocktail of immune boosters,” the statement added.

EBOLA: FIVE NEW CASES IN LAGOS

Ebola: Five new cases in Lagos as doctor gets kudos

Lagos has recorded five additional suspected cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD),  the state government said yesterday.
Commissioner for Health Dr. Jide Idris, who gave an update on the government’s efforts to contain the virus, said two of the fresh cases are secondary contacts. The remaining three are primary contacts with the late Liberian Patrick Sawyer who imported the disease into Nigeria.
According to the commissioner, the fresh suspected cases have increased the number of patients in isolation wards from two to six. One of the suspected cases is a Liberian who was brought into the isolation centre from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The Liberian has since been released, having tested negative to the virus.
Idris said: “Till date, we have recorded eight suspected cases, five of which were brought in yesterday. We have 12 confirmed cases on the whole, out of which five have died and five have been discharged. We are currently following up on 213 contacts while 62 have completed the 21-day follow-up.
“Yesterday, we recorded the death of the Senior Consultant/Endocrinologist of First Consultant Hospital, Obalende, Lagos, Dr. Stella Shade Ameyo Adadevoh. She, it was, who took the initiative to intimate the ministry concerning the index case and substantially to her credit, the moderate containment achieved we owe to her and her colleagues.”
Idris, recalled that the late Dr. Adadevoh led the team which attended to the index case and her doggedness and commitment saw her personally reviewing the case even though the patient had earlier been seen by a doctor.
“No doubt, she and other affected health workers are our heroes and heroines,” the commissioner said, adding:
“The Ministry of Health and indeed the Lagos State Government, commiserate with their families, co-workers, friends and loved ones on these irreparable losses which was on the line of duty.”
Idris said the ministry was continuing with the vigorous contact tracing which is now shifting from primary to secondary contacts, adding that the mode of spread remains mainly transmission from an infected person in an infective state and from infected animals.
He said: “This is call for vigilance as human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill (fever being a key sign) from Ebola virus through body fluids, such as blood, urine, stool, saliva, breast milk, semen and vomitus.
“Burial ceremonies where mourners, including family members, have direct contact with patients who died of Ebola have also played a role in the spread and direct contact with bodies should be minimised at this period.”
Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba said the Federal Government had not given the state any money to fight Ebola.
He said: “May be the Federal Government will release funds later. But we are grateful for all the Federal Government has done, giving us technical support in the fight against the virus, releasing their staff for contact tracing, case management, operation of the Emergency operation centre and the rapid response team.
“This is a collaborative effort between the Federal, state government and other foreign partners. As at now, we are yet to receive money from the Federal Government.”
Ibirogba explained that the money spent so far on the health of the Ebola victims were funds released by Governor Babatunde Fashola to combat the disease.
But Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said yesterday that the Federal Government had approved  N200 million for the Lagos State government to contain the spread of Ebola.
Chukwu spoke to reporters at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
He said that the decision by President Goodluck Jonathan to assist the Lagos State government was in line with the commitment of the administration to tackle the Ebola disease and halt its further spread to other parts of the country.
Chukwu added that the United States government in support of the Federal Government’s efforts to check the spread of the virus had donated  30 body scanners.
The scanners that will measure temperature of travellers coming in and going out of the country, he said, would soon be deployed in major entry points across the country.
“As at today, Nigeria has had a total number of 12 cases of ebola, which include the index case, the Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, 11 Nigerians who were primary contacts with the one  index case. Of this 12, the total number of successful cases who have been discharged stands at five but the total number of deaths, including the index case, stands at five dead. Currently, the total number of cases in Nigeria are two, made up of one doctor, one nurse who had managed the index case and they are presently on treatment at the isolation centres.”
“The latest death occurred Tuesday evening and that is the death of the most senior doctor, senior consultant/physician/endrocologist at First Consultant Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh.”
“Regrettably, she lost her life to Ebola virus. Of course, she contacted the disease from the Liberian-American who exported the disease to Nigeria in the cause of treating that patient.”
“Indeed she had to physically restrain this infected person from escaping from hospital when the latter attempted to do so having been communicated that he was Ebola positive.”
He went on: “Indeed if that index case had escaped hospital at that stage, it would have spelt disaster for Nigeria, as many more persons, many of them who would have been very difficult to track, could have become primary contacts.”
“There is no doubt that Dr. Adadevoh is not only dedicated, committed and competent doctor, but she showed rare courage, rare sense of duty, service and patriotism to her country.”
“The  Minister of Health met with the family of the Late Dr. Adadevoh last Saturday in Lagos. The meeting was cordial and fruitful  in the sense that misconceptions and wrong information were thoroughly addressed, leading to better understanding and appreciation by the family of the efforts being made by the government to save the lives of all affected persons. And they did commend the Federal Government.”
Noting that there were rumours of the infection in some parts of the country, Chukwu said that they all turned out to be negative after tests were carried out.
On the discharged Ebola patients, he said: “We also want to say what we have gone through in discharging the Ebola patients who are now free of the virus; they do not pose any danger to the society.
“Anybody could suffer from any disease that person does not deserve to be stigmatise.”
According to Chukwu, the American Ambassador had explained that the trial drug, ZMapp, had not been sent to Nigeria because it is out of stock.
He added: “Presently, we have not stopped requesting for drug, the company in Canada and a lot of Nigerians, including the High Commissioner of Nigeria to Canada, are making that request to see whether the other drug being manufactured in Canada called TKM Ebola would also be extended to Nigeria. It is an experimental drug.”
“For whatever drug and if the patient gives us the consent, I want to stress this point that Nigeria, as an organised country, the drug will have to pass through our health ethics committee to have approval.”
On requests to carry out festivals in Osun and Ebonyi states, Chukwu said: “A letter from Osun State seeking to continue with Osun Festival is still being considered. The National Arts and Culture Festival in Ebonyi has been postponed.”
He said Atedo Peterside donated N100,000 through his foundation per bed per day to affected private hospitals. The first beneficiary is First Consultant Hospital, Lagos where the index case was managed.
He said: “The hospital has 40 beds and so will receive N4 million from that foundation. This is to aid the hospital to continue to pay its staff who have all been asked to stay at home and the hospital closed as a result of the confirmed case of Ebola virus.
“The hospital will have to be decontaminated. All the staff in the hospital who were around during the first index case are all under survillence and so are not working,” the minister said
Frontline businessman Tony Elumelu has pledged N50 million towards eradicating the disease in Nigeria, he said, adding that  Shell had allocated an ambulance to convey Ebola patients.
On the strike by doctors, Chukwu said: “They were not sacked; it is a matter of interpretation. For example, can someone while still working actively dies, or whether that person resigned or was dismissed or retired or terminated, all mean different things in the public service. But the end point is that the person is no longer working.
“I want us to put things in perspective. Government did not sack anybody. It is true that they themselves have not been working for almost two months, except those in private hospitals. Resident doctors in both federal and state hospitals have not been working for almost two months now and they have not participated in the control of this Ebola virus disease; they have not played any role.”
“So, even if government had not taken any decision, they are not there, they are not working and I don’t know why suddenly the media starts taking interest in them. They are not part of this success story. But what happened is like in the aviation industry where when you buy a ticket and you fail to show up, they say ‘no show’ and they even penalise you. So there is no show of the resident doctors and even government is still paying them.”
He added: “People who are unemployed even some doctors will be asking government a question, ‘is it because we did not have an appointment letter?’ What is the difference; you are paying people who are not working, we too are not working, why are you not paying us.
Sometimes we need to think deeply about what we do to ourselves.
“Government says why can’t we use this period to appraise properly the residency programme and come up with something that can help the country. Training of a doctor must be done properly. They have an allotted time to acquire skills. Anybody can pass the theoretical exams, but has he acquired the skills? We need to be honest with ourselves.”
“If you suspend any course, do you keep students redundant? You give them opportunity. If they feel you are wasting their time, they can apply for other courses.”
“This is only in federal hospitals; the federal government is not deciding for the states or private hospitals. It is not a permanent thing. I believe we will quickly appraise this situation and hopefully government will resume residency programme because honestly we need to train doctors in the specialist areas.”
The FEC yesterday also received update from the Health Ministry on efforts to kick out polio virus from Nigeria.
The Minister of State for Health, Khaliru Al-Hassan, said while 43 cases were recorded in Nigeria last year, only three cases have so far been recorded this year.

EYEOPENER:MERMAIDS AND ALIENS EXIST! OBAMA MET MERMAIDS

THE SKELETON OF A MERMAID FOUND BY ARCHAEOLOGIST

Animal Planet television recently aired a special called “Mermaids: The Body Found,” that also proved the existence of mermaids.
National Ocean Service spokeswoman Sandy Nixon told WWN that “at least 65 mermaid researchers and experts gathered on the island of Tahiti to examine all the known evidence and have concluded, emphatically, that  half human half-fish hybrids are living peacefully among us.

WWN has also learned that recently the U.S. government has captured 7 mermaids and that they are being kept at an undisclosed aquarium, where they are being studied.  President Obama has personally met the mermaids and was quite impressed

Around 100 million worlds in our galaxy could host alien life, according to a ‘conservative’ prediction by Nasa. The US space agency say we will be able to find that life within the next two decades, with a high chance it will be outside our solar system. “Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘that star has a planet like Earth’,” said Sara Seager, an American professor of planetary science and physics revealed at a conference in Washington. “Just imagine the moment when we find potential signatures of life,” agreed Matt Mountain, a space telescope expert.

Google Invests in $300 Million Underwater Cable

PHOTO: A contract has been awarded to NEC to build new 60Tb/s system expected to be ready-for-service during the second quarter of 2016.
Even the largest ocean in the world isn't going to get in Google's way.
The search giant announced today it is joining five other companies to build a $300 million undersea cable system that will span the Pacific Ocean, making the Internet faster for users in Asia.
The high speed submarine cable, called Faster, will connect two coastal locations in Japan with major West Coast cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.
Once complete, the cable will operate at 60 terabits per second, which is about ten million times faster than the typical cable modem, Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said today in a Google+ post.
"At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable, and that requires a great network infrastructure, whether it's for the more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform," Hölzle said. "And sometimes the fastest path requires going through an ocean."
Construction on Faster will begin immediately, according to a news release from NEC, the IT and network technology company that was awarded the contract to lay the cable. The project is scheduled to make its debut sometime during the second quarter of 2016.
It's not the first time Google has gone underwater to improve Internet speed. In 2008, the company invested in cable that connected Southeast Asia and Japan.
The company also backed UNITY, another Trans-Pacific cable system between the
United States and Japan that debuted in 2010. The cable has a capacity of 7.68 terabits per second, according to Submarine Cable Networks, meaning that the newly backed cable system will blow it out of the water.

EBOLA:LATEST NEWS, DEATH TOLL RISES

PHOTO: Members of Doctors Without Borders are pictured wearing protective gear outside an isolation ward of the Donka Hospital on July 23, 2014 in Conakry, Guinea.
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak spreading through Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia has grown to 1,145 – a number considered to be a vast underestimate of virus’s true impact.
In just two days, more than 150 new cases of were reported and 76 people died despite drastic efforts to curb the worst-ever outbreak, according to the World Health Organization.
“Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak,” the organization said in a statement, adding that outbreak is “expected to continue for some time.”

OMAWUNMI BABY'S DADDY FOUND

In 2011 when news broke that singer Omawumi was pregnant, the question that immediately followed was ‘who’s the daddy?’ The identity of her baby’s father was shrouded in mystery, and as such, several random names began to fly around including a popular south-south governor.
She welcomed her first child Emmanuella Kamillah Yusuf on Saturday, June 18, 2011 in the U.S and new reports surfaced in the media claiming that Tosin Yusuf, one time co-owner of Zamunda night club was actually Kamillah’s father. All through this period, Omawumi kept her cool and refused to reveal the father of her daughter. But her close friend, and daughter’s godmother, Waje dropped a hint when she mentioned Tosin Yusuf in a tweet on May 7th, 2013, saying: ‘you don’t even care what your silky stories would be doing to her. Tosin Yussuf is fine and well, leave the poor girl alone. Tufiakwa!!!’.  At this point, keen observers knew his name, but all efforts to unmask the face behind the name by the media have since yielded no positive results.

In late 2013, Omawumi herself released a blurry picture on instagram of her nuclear family that included herself, her daughter and Tosin Yussuf, with the caption ‘Thank you so much for your patience.
Clearer photos and good news sooner than you know. God is always good’. Shortly afterwards, another picture of Omawumi and 5 men surfaced online, and those in the know claimed that Omawumi’s boo is one of the men.

French Montana reportedly bought Khloé Kardashian a £29,000 car for her birthday.
The 29-year-old rapper whose real name is Karim Kharbouch went all out for the reality TV star’s special occasion on June 26, and gifted her a swanky white Jeep in celebration of her turning 30. The pair, who have reportedly been dating since April, appeared smitten with each other as they marked the milestone with a lavish party at the upmarket Don Coqui restaurant in The Bronx, New York City. At 1.am, French led the brunette beauty, whose actual birthday falls on June 27, into the restaurant car park, where her new Wrangler Sahara Jeep awaited her, according to the MailOnline. Khloé’s friends and family including sisters Kim, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie stood on the steps outside as they watched the star accept her generous gift. As well as a shiny new car, Khloé was also treated to a three-tier white cake, which was complete with three huge firework candles and a gorgeous gold bow. Taking to her Instagram account last night the stunner posted a picture of her blowing out the candles, which she accompanied with the cryptic caption: ‘I couldn’t help but wish for a couple of forevers.’ Meanwhile, Khloé’s mother Kris Jenner recently claimed the ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ star and French were nothing more than good ‘friends’. Khloé filed for divorce from her ex-husband Lamar Odom in December after four years of marriage following rumours he was addicted to cocaine and cheated on her multiple times. ...
