Google Invests in $300 Million Underwater Cable

PHOTO: A contract has been awarded to NEC to build new 60Tb/s system expected to be ready-for-service during the second quarter of 2016.
Even the largest ocean in the world isn't going to get in Google's way.
The search giant announced today it is joining five other companies to build a $300 million undersea cable system that will span the Pacific Ocean, making the Internet faster for users in Asia.
The high speed submarine cable, called Faster, will connect two coastal locations in Japan with major West Coast cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.
Once complete, the cable will operate at 60 terabits per second, which is about ten million times faster than the typical cable modem, Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said today in a Google+ post.
"At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable, and that requires a great network infrastructure, whether it's for the more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform," Hölzle said. "And sometimes the fastest path requires going through an ocean."
Construction on Faster will begin immediately, according to a news release from NEC, the IT and network technology company that was awarded the contract to lay the cable. The project is scheduled to make its debut sometime during the second quarter of 2016.
It's not the first time Google has gone underwater to improve Internet speed. In 2008, the company invested in cable that connected Southeast Asia and Japan.
The company also backed UNITY, another Trans-Pacific cable system between the
United States and Japan that debuted in 2010. The cable has a capacity of 7.68 terabits per second, according to Submarine Cable Networks, meaning that the newly backed cable system will blow it out of the water.

EBOLA:LATEST NEWS, DEATH TOLL RISES

PHOTO: Members of Doctors Without Borders are pictured wearing protective gear outside an isolation ward of the Donka Hospital on July 23, 2014 in Conakry, Guinea.
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak spreading through Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia has grown to 1,145 – a number considered to be a vast underestimate of virus’s true impact.
In just two days, more than 150 new cases of were reported and 76 people died despite drastic efforts to curb the worst-ever outbreak, according to the World Health Organization.
“Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak,” the organization said in a statement, adding that outbreak is “expected to continue for some time.”

OMAWUNMI BABY'S DADDY FOUND

In 2011 when news broke that singer Omawumi was pregnant, the question that immediately followed was ‘who’s the daddy?’ The identity of her baby’s father was shrouded in mystery, and as such, several random names began to fly around including a popular south-south governor.
She welcomed her first child Emmanuella Kamillah Yusuf on Saturday, June 18, 2011 in the U.S and new reports surfaced in the media claiming that Tosin Yusuf, one time co-owner of Zamunda night club was actually Kamillah’s father. All through this period, Omawumi kept her cool and refused to reveal the father of her daughter. But her close friend, and daughter’s godmother, Waje dropped a hint when she mentioned Tosin Yusuf in a tweet on May 7th, 2013, saying: ‘you don’t even care what your silky stories would be doing to her. Tosin Yussuf is fine and well, leave the poor girl alone. Tufiakwa!!!’.  At this point, keen observers knew his name, but all efforts to unmask the face behind the name by the media have since yielded no positive results.

In late 2013, Omawumi herself released a blurry picture on instagram of her nuclear family that included herself, her daughter and Tosin Yussuf, with the caption ‘Thank you so much for your patience.
Clearer photos and good news sooner than you know. God is always good’. Shortly afterwards, another picture of Omawumi and 5 men surfaced online, and those in the know claimed that Omawumi’s boo is one of the men.
